BDLGA Foursomes
Carol Kirkwood and Sarah Martin represented the club in the BDLGA Handicap Foursomes at home to Shirehampton Park on Thursday. I am pleased to say that they won 3 & 2 and are now through to round two where they will play either Thornbury or Tracy Park.
Sandra Jones and Merriel Horler represented the club in the BDLGA Scratch Foursomes away at Burnham & Berrow. Never an easy task to play at this club, but against very low handicappers they lost on the 16th. Well done to both teams.
Ladies Mail on Sunday
In their fourth round match the Ladies Mail on Sunday team played at Saltford Golf Club. After four games the match was tied so it came down the last game. In a very close encounter Rosemary Fife held her nerve to close out her game and thus win the tie on the 20th Hole. The ladies now progress to the 5th round, good luck to everyone involved.
Somerset County Foursomes
Clevedon Golf Club hosted the County Scratch Foursomes competition and although there was a disppointingly smaller field than normal, the home pair proved very worthy winners. They opened their account with a score of 75, one shot ahead of Craig Manson and Jamie Tompkins also of Clevedon Golf Club. In third place after the morning round were late entrants Sam Fernley and Will Bennett. They had finished competing in the West of England Amateur Championships at Saunton and had travelled to Clevedon to take part. They were just three shots off the pace at the half way stage.
As the second round got underway, Andy Ferris and Myles Angel held their game together to shoot a 76. They faced an anxious wait as rumours were coming in that Sam and Will were on a charge and the deficit was being reduced. In the end Sam and Will finished with a round of the day of 74, leaving the Clevedon team to win by one shot. Andy is a seasoned member of the County Development squad and Myles is keen to catch the eye of team captain Neil Mossman to show that he has recaptured his earlier form. The trophy was presnented by SGU Vice President Paul Middleton who thaked Clevedon Captain Mike Parker and Chairman David Fife for allowing the competition to be held at their course.
Seniors Somerset Bowl
The scratch team played Saltford at Weston-Super-Mare coming away with a 3 1/2 - 1 1/2 victory. The handicap team played Wells at Saltford, another win was secured here by the margin of 4 - 1.
2nd Team
Thursday night saw the the second team defeat Mendip Spring 1st Team at home. A good effort by the lads after losing the first two matches but showing resolve to secure the last three games for a well earned victory.
Club Stableford and Spring Cup
This competition saw some exceptional scoring with the leading three players all accumulating 41 points each. The overall winner (on countback) and recipient of the Spring Cup was Tom Rowlinson. Well done Tom.
Seniors Arthur Hall Shield & Midweek Stableford
Tuesday saw the Seniors Arthur Hall Shield played and also a Midweek Stableford. Stephen Hill took the spoils with 39 points in the Seniors event. Jamie Osment accumulated 41 points to triumph in the Midweek stableford.
Ash Mansell
Congratulatoins go to Ash who's second place finish in the fourth and final event of the Assistants Sprint was good enough to secure him the Order of Merit for 2015. Ash receives the trophy along with sponsorship from Titleist and FootJoy. Very well done Ash! A great platform to push forwards from into the season. It's been a great week all round on the golf course and I'd like to congratulate every one concerned.
Are you showing signs of insanity?
Anyone that puts in the time on the range deserves their success come the weekend. However, it's not just hard work that gets that handicap down or grooves that soft draw you've been working on. To help explain, have you heard the saying,
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?"
How true this can be.
Next time you head to the range ask yourself whether what you're doing in practice is actually helping; maybe you're exacerbating a problem, grooving a swing path that's working against you? We commend those of you who put the hours in away from the course, but for the best results you want that time to really count.
A quick refresher or game assessment with the team could really help, after which you'll get more from your practice sessions - which you can then take to the course.
