In this week’s mail we have the latest competition results, we have a special Video of the Week with none other than Rory McIlroy, we take a closer look at who will be trying to play their way into Bjorn's Ryder Cup team, and we offer a little advice on how to improve your game.

Club news

Betterball Stableford - Saturday, 25 August

Some remarkable scoring in Saturday's Betterball event, most notably from Tony Somerville and Andy Robertson. They ran out winners by some three shots with a total of 49 points. In fact, the top 46 pairings all scored 40 points or better. A brief rundown of the scores is below:

1st place - Tony Somerville and Andy Robertson - 49 points
2nd place - Roy Quipp and Tony Mills - 46 points
3rd place - Tony Bradley and Colin McFadden - 46 points
4th place - John Hurst and Alec Rendall - 46 points
5th place - Dave McGovern and Brian Baker - 46 points

Bank Holiday Mixed Bowmaker - Monday, 27 August

A very well supported event was played on Monday with lots of new faces enjoying all that Clevedon Golf Club has to offer.

The scoring matched the support also with Juliet Hagley, Mike Parker, Gaynor Richards and Derek Phibben running out victors with an impressive 92 points. Runners up with 88 points was Ruth Steele, David Steele, Joy Gwatkin and Ken McGeehan.

Bob Anderson had the only two of the day and as a result scoops the £33.00 pot.

Midweek Stableford - Tuesday, 28 August

Division One
First place - Bob Anderson (43 points), second place - Craig Andrews (41 points), and in third place - Jon Green (40 points).

Division Two
First place - Ross Hodgkinson (42 points), second place - Neil Mathias-Williams (38 points), and in third place - Kevin Lennox (37 points).

Junior Open & Adult/Junior Open

Just four weeks to go

The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic.

There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

Setting your sights
