Academy news

Junior Golf

Junior GolfNow the clocks have changed giving us lighter evenings, and we approach the start of the golfing season, we've been busy planning our schedule of events for junior golfers. All of our events will be open to everyone, not just existing junior members. If you have sons, daughters, grandchildren, nephews or nieces who'd like to improve their golf or just give it a try, there will be something to get involved in.

Firstly our 'Club Night' sessions will commence on Monday, 24 April, these sessions will be every Monday evening (except Bank Holidays) and run from 6:00pm until 7:00pm(ish). There is no charge to attend for members members and £3 for non-members, and we will be providing a mixture of coaching along with some fun games that will appeal to all ages.

Our next offering will be during the Easter period when we're going to run two 'Easter Camps', one on Thursday, 13 April and one on Thursday, 20 April. These will run from 10:00am until 3:00pm and will include some time on the practice ground, some time on the short game area and putting green and some time on the golf course. Each camp will be £25 and includes all coaching and equipment if needed, drinks throughout the day and lunch.

We've also been working with The Golf Foundation to initiate our Junior Academy. These will take place on Saturdays throughout the year. One session will be from 1:00pm - 2:00pm and one session from 2:15pm until 3:15pm and will be £6 per session. The first session will take place on Saturday, 29 April. During these sessions we'll be covering all aspects of the game using a structured learning process. Each academy pupil will work through the Junior Golf Passport system. Click here for more details.

We'd like to see as many existing and new faces as we can so get in touch here if you have young friends or relatives that would like to give golf a try or improve their existing game.

Tour news

Impressive. So, so impressive.

Match play golf throws up many different obstacles than the traditional stroke play round, mainly due to the fact you're no longer competing against the course but instead an opponent. It doesn't matter if you make a birdie or double-bogey, all you need to do is beat your opponent's score on any given hole.

This was evident in the weekend's World Match Play final between hot prospect Jon Rahm and world number one Dustin Johnson. Rahm found himself five down through eight holes and realised he needed something special to get back into the match. Well how about driving a 270-yard par-four into the wind and over the water? It's this type of exciting golf that makes match play so appealing.

Ultimately it was Dustin who came out on top on the final green, completing a career WGC grand slam in the process - the first man to do so. He played some remarkable golf throughout the week, never finding himself behind in any given match. It'll take a brave man to bet against the American winning the Masters considering he's won each of his last three outings, but there are others out there who will give him a run for his money at Augusta.

Who do you think will win the Masters? Cast your vote here.
